Schlangensonne / snake sun
Mown grass, brick powder, gravel
59m x 89m, 2025
For Schlangensonne, Dara Friedman has created a labyrinth on the central meadow adjacent to the Villa Lantz. Redirecting the linear path originally conceived by Joseph Clemens Weyhe as the main axis running through Lanz’scher Park, the labyrinth unfolds as a star-like meander that unwinds through the grass of the northern and southern meadows. Like snakes coiling through the grass, the eight loops unravel around a central circle accentuated by red snake “eyes” and vertebrae-like stripes across the park’s main passage, both made of brick powder.
Schlangensonne sprawls and crawls languorously, occupying and generating a generous space, articulated through the lightest touch of mowed grass. This labyrinth is an open invitation to share and participate offering a choreography for reflection not only onto its surrounding landscape but one that pivots the body and potentially the inner landscape as well.
